These days, LED TVs are becoming very popular among the people who run for every new technology coming to the market. However, there is no such thing as "LED" TV.In Fact, there are LCD TVs with LED-backlighting. If you are thinking of bringing this new technology home, it is better you collect information about Led TVs. Also, understand the difference between LED TVs and LCD TVs.

An LCD TV gets its brightness from CCFL backlight. In LED TVs, which is an LCD TV, an LED-backlight is provided. These LED-backlights can on and off individually. These LEDs are arranged either along one side of the screen or behind the entire screen. If arranged on one side of the screen, it is called Edge LED and if arranged behind entire screen, it is called Direct or Full LED.

Sometimes these LEDs are arranged in the form of clusters behind the screen. You can easily understand the difference between a simple LCD TV and an LED TV when you watch scenes with dark colors or night scenes.A CCFL-backlight LCD TV is not able to dim the black areas of the image very convincingly. It shows an image with gray where it should be black. It does not show any detail which should be brightly lit. It shows that the contrast of the panel is not satisfactory.

However, in an LED-backlight TV, there is no such problem, since each pixel can light up according to the images of the picture. To tackle this problem of contrast, LED lights are being used in stead of CCFL-lights. The number of LEDs and their arrangement depends upon the brand.

In a TV with EDGE LED systems, light is directed from sides to the centre of the screen. However, this system is not that effective as it does not create good contrast ratio. It does not provide local dimming.TVs with this technology are easier and cheaper to manufacture.

Direct LED systems create more impressive pictures. It has many more LEDs arranged in all over the screen in clusters. It is more expensive too. In addition, it adds a few more millimeters to the TV.

Some manufacturers use both systems; EDGE LED and Direct LED, to create the best effect and deliver most impressive pictures. There are a few eminent brands which are offering LED TVs in India such as Sony LED TV, Videocon LED TV and others.
