Although late, but Sony has perfectly tried to bring in differentiating factor with its Compaq performer, Sony Tablet S. Sony devices are known for spewing stylish looks hence it has very confidently given Tablet S a folded magazine type form factor. It is convenient to use on a flat surfaces as it gives a good viewing and typing angle in landscape mode, while in portrait mode it is easy to hold. The dimples on the back give it a good grip for easy handling. Despite the plasticky feel of the body, the all black and matte silver color combination makes the Tablet S look smart.
The Tablet S runs on a 1 GHz Dual Core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, has 1GB RAM and comes with an internal memory of 16GB. The front is glossy with a 9.4-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display featuring 800 x 1280 pixels resolution. The capacitive touchscreen is not a gorilla glass display and is prone to fingerprints. It has an SD card slot but it can only be used for transferring files. There are two cameras- a 5.0 MP and a VGA in front for video calling. The tab has a micro USB port but uses a proprietary port for charging. Talking of charging, the tablet comes with a massive charger. Sony also uses the TruBlack technology from its Bravia TV line to make the screen contrast really pop. Fortunately, the excellent backup provided by the 5000 mAh battery means we will not need to lug it around all the time. Adding sugar to the mixture, Tablet S is PlayStation-certified, and run emulator software allowing it to play select PS One and PSP game titles. The original PS One hit Crash Bandicoot comes preinstalled, along with a version of Pinball Heroes. The Tablet S runs on Android Honeycomb 3.2. This version of the Android OS has been specifically crafted to suit the need of tablet users. Sony has enhanced the UI with several tweaks exclusive to its tablet like the favorites icon has been added on the top left next to the Apps icon. For connectivity, it comes with Wi-Fi content sharing through DLNA, GPS and Bluetooth. There is also infrared that lets us use the tablet as a remote control for various devices like TV’s and DVD players. To outshine more, Tablet S maintains Sony’s proud tradition in multimedia field. As for the playback, the tablet is able to play 1080p videos but didn’t have support for formats like .MKV. In short, the sound quality is excellent. Despite of carrying the goody factor, the lack of storage on the 16GB version and its proprietary charger is unfortunate.
This Sony Tablet is a good option for anyone looking for a feature-rich Honeycomb tablet. Apart from this, there are three features which can only be found in this tablet - Wedge shape ergonomic design, PlayStation games and a universal remote control.
